pino's pizzeria ristorante @ willoughby rd., crows nest

I think each and everyone one of us is a food critic in our own way. As much as you say that you're not that into food, you're more than likely to make comments such as, 'I think this tastes better here....', 'This is too soggy...' We may not always know what something should taste like when it's foreign but in the end, we are judges of what we like and what we don't like and well, this what I was thinking when the comment of 'These cheaps aren't that great here' was made when we eating dinner at Pino's Pizzeria Ristorante @ Crows Nest.

My friend brought us to Pino's on  Sunday night. He'd been before with his family and thoroughly recommended it. I've actually been going through a bit of an Italian food craze at the moment and was very keen to check this place out and well, I had a rather enjoyable night in the company of great food and great friends.

Garlic Pizza Bread to start the meal. We had a table of 4 so worked out to be 2 pieces for the boys and 1 piece each for the girls. It was flavoursome and didn't fill us up too much so we could enjoy the rest of the meal.

Fried Calamari which was enjoyed by all. Wouldn't have minded a few more on the plate!

Potato Fries. One my friend's had a hankering for fries which is why we ordered fries at an Italian restaurant. If you look at the menu, it's actually a side for people who order steaks so I'm sure the waiter probably found us a bit weird when we ordered. When it came to the table, it did ease off my friend's cravings but we all did comment that the fries weren't that great, they weren't fries cause they weren't nice and thin, and in the end could be better down the road at Ogalo's with a good does of chicken salt. Which leads me to query, it is a fault of the restaurant that they don't do good fries (when it's very obvious it's not what they specialise in) or should we know better not to order it? In the end, the fries did the job to satisfy the cravings and please don't let me deter you from ordering it when you come here.

Gnocchi Gorgonzola. Slightly disappointed with this one as the the gnocchi was tasting a little bit soggy.

Rigatoni Amatriciana. Loved the sharp bite taste of chilli in this one.

Pino's Speciale.

Tiramisu to share.

Had a great night out and little did I know that a plate of fries would get me thinking!

The 'fries' do look a bit pale and soggy, I'm afraid. But I agree that I'm not in the habit of ordering fries/chips when eating Italian... And unfortunately gnocchi and risotto are both things that are hard to get right so it's always a bit of a gamble! Pizzas look decent though and Pino's is one of the places that we've yet to get around to so thanks for the tips =)

I find French fries a bit more reliably good. The thicker cut chips can become a bit floury in my experience.

mademoiselle delicieuse - actually i still feel rather silly for ordering fries at an italian recipe but then again i think, if you're going to put something on your menu, you should try to make it good! agree re. gnocchi and risotto, not the easiest things to get right when you eat out (and really, when you cook it at home yourself, it's hard too!)

jo - let me know what you think if you end up going!

lorraine - i actually didn't think of it that way but you're right, french fries do seem to turn out better most of the time!
